Notes

Other Common Names
Common Brown Ringlet, Common Ringlet

I had thought I'd seen more of these, but I was tipped off (thanks Don!) to the likelihood that I actually had H. pseudirius instead. The two species are certainly very similar. I re-examined my photos, and came to the conclusion that only two of them were actually H. metirius.
In the Spring of 2004, they were again harder to find than H. pseudirius. They appeared to emerge later in the spring, and weren't so widely distributed. When I finally did find one, it did not behave much like H. pseudirius, as it was flying a metre or two higher off the ground, and liked to bask on shrubs rather than at ground level.
