These butterflies appeared to breed on the two trees in front of the cafe, across the road from the Art Gallery of NSW. Unfortunately those trees have been removed.

I’ve been here 4 or 5 times in total as historically it was a site for Hypochrysops byzos (Yellow Jewel). I didn’t find it, or anything else really, on any of these visits.

I’ve been there 2 or 3 times without really seeing anything. Apparently this was once a good hilltopping site, but some of the hilltop has been built on and anyway the trees are too tall for butterfly photography. That’s a shame because I have seen a photo of Ogyris ianthis (Golden Azure) that was taken here, but it had landed way too high up for a clear shot.

I went here a few times hoping to find Oreisplanus peronatus, which has supposedly been recorded here. Although it looks like a site where there should be plenty of butterflies I’ve never seen much of interest here, with one exception…

I’ve photographed the wonderful Anisynta monticolae on flowers right next to the entrance to the Grand Arch! When I was here in early February 2009 there were enormous numbers of Heteronympha paradelpha, all cowering in the shade on a day when it was at least 42C.

I’ve found the shrubs at the boundary of the backyard that adjoins this path to be very attractive to butterflies when they’re in flower, as they were when I was there in late March 2016.

This is definitely worth multiple visits. There are plenty of walking tracks; the Red, Blue, Green & Yellow Arrow tracks, plus the hillside going down from the Aeroglen Lookout towards the airport. There are lots of different habitat types, and so lots of butterfly species.

Despite the amount of litter this site is home to a large variety of butterfly species, some of them very special indeed.

I spent a day on Magnetic Island looking for Hesperilla sexguttata – unsuccessfully. I didn’t see all that many butterflies, other than a lot of Hypocysta irius and Elodina queenslandica, none of which was in the mood to pose for photos.

It was a cool and overcast day when I went to Mount Lofty. I hardly saw any butterflies, and the only thing I photographed was a Trapezites phigalia whilst I was crossing the carpark on my way to the cafe to await my bus back down towards Adelaide.

I went here hoping to find Mesodina hayi, which was conspicuously absent in both 2016 and 2017. In fact on the latter year I hardly saw any butterflies at all, but in 2016 there was a nice bonus…

  • Nesoxenica leprea (Tasmanian Xenica). This species was the reason for my quick visit to Tasmania in January 2019. I saw 2 or 3 of them on Sawmill Track, but they never gave me a photo opportunity.

I was hoping to find Trapezites luteus glaucus here; no sign of it despiet there being enormous amounts of its foodplant (Lomandra longifolia)
