Notes

My first sighting of this butterfly was thanks to Bob Miller, who spotted one flying into the shrubs at the side of the track at Atherton, and called me over to get shots of her. I got a couple of pics of one side, and moved round to get shots of the other side – I got one from that angle and then she was gone. I didn’t see her go, and had no idea where she’d flown to, so unfortunately I wasn’t able to get any more shots.

The following year I found a great spot for them in the Smithfield Regional Park just to the north of Cairns. The track through the rainforest widened to an elongated clearing, which became very busy if the sun came out (a rare occurrence on that particular trip). Unfortunately this spot was totally obliterated a couple of years later, as the track was widened and “improved” to cater for the local mountain biking enthusiasts. There’s nothing to see now; it’s hard for me to even locate that little site any more as it was bulldozed quite thoroughly.
