Jamides phaseli (Purple Cerulean)

Other Common Names

Dark Cerulean

Notes

I saw a lot of this very unspectacular species around Cairns in April 2006. It seemed that this butterfly was never far away, generally just one or two of them, but sometimes a number would be congregated on the one spot. If there was just one, or if they were feeding, it wasn’t too hard to get photos. But where a number of them were in the same spot they would no sooner land than others would chase them off – presumably these specimens were all males engaged in territorial disputes.
Funnily enough, when I’d been in Cairns the previous October I didn’t get any photos of this species.
