Jalmenus lithochroa (Waterhouse’s Hairstreak)

Other Common Name

Lithochroa Blue

Notes

My butterflying mate Alex has been rearing this species, and sent me a fresh pair of adults to photograph. They didn’t enjoy the trip via Express Post, so I just took a few shots (22/03/2017) while they were still extremely groggy.

As I was spending 8 days in the Barossa Valley over Christmas 2019 (wine-tasting!), I asked Alex if there were any butterfly spots worth visiting in the area. He kindly gave me the location for a colony of  lithochroa he’d found near Terowie, so on Boxing Day we went for a bit of a drive…
There were a lot of the nasty, spiky Acacia victoriae bushes at that spot, but checking them all only revealed 3 butterflies. I believe they were all females, probably the last of their generation. Two were worn and tatty but the third looked fresh, though not very keen to pose for photos.

Sightings

Terowie, SA – December 2019
