Phaedyma shepherdi (White-banded Plane)

Other Common names

Common Aeroplane

Notes

This is yet another species that I’ve seen much more often than I’ve been able to photograph.  I see them on just about every visit to Cairns, though never more than the odd one or two butterflies and they’re usually in no mood to pose for my camera. They tend to land higher up than I’d like, and the chances of them alighting before I get close enough to take a photo are very high.

As a result I don’t have a lot of photos of shepherdi, though I finally came across a very cooperative specimen on the JCU campus in Townsville in mid-December 2017.

Sightings

Cairns – Probably every visit.
Brisbane – April 2011
Townsville – December 2017
