Heteronympha penelope (Shouldered Brown)

Notes

I’d been to the Blue Mountains several times looking for this species and H. paradelpha, without any success. Finally I found both of them in an area of woodland
close to Blackheath. The only specimens I identified as H. penelope were males, flying along wide paths and clearings where paths intersected. They were difficult to approach, and when disturbed would fly up into the treetops before descending to the ground again.

Since then I’ve come across males a few more times, with the closest site to Sydney being at Wentworth Falls, but the only female I’ve photographed to date was in the Kanangra Boyd National Park.
