Theclinesthes sulpitius (Samphire Blue)

Other Common Names

Saltpan Blue

Notes

I first saw this butterfly fluttering around a small plant at the Georges River National Park. Unfortunately this was on just about my first serious attempt to get photos for this project, so I didn’t get many pics of it and they weren’t very good.

In October 2004, I went looking for this species along Little Salt Pan Creek at Revesby. In one or two areas the ground was carpeted with samphires, and they in turn were carpeted with these butterflies. Finding them was easy enough, but photographing them was difficult, as this is one of those species that flutters around almost constantly.

The best site I’ve come across for this species is at the Mason Park wetlands, where the salt marsh is home to a lot of samphires.
