Appias melania (Grey Albatross)

Notes

I had been to Cairns several times, at various different times of the year, so I’d been surprised not to have seen this species. Finally in April 2011, I saw one at Crystal Cascades; he was mostly puddling from the damp ground but at times perched on shrubs to bask in the sunshine. There was only the one butterfly of this species, despite the fact that they can sometimes be seen in numbers, so I was fortunate to see him.
Since then I’ve only photographed one more, which was puddling along Black Mountain Road at Kuranda.
