Ypthima arctous (Dusky Knight)

Other Common Names

Dingy Ring

Notes

These butterflies are very easily overlooked, as they are inconspicuous. When they land they rarely rest with their wings open, so getting pictures of their uppersides is difficult. I eventually managed it on a cloudy day, when I found a specimen who was desperate to soak up whatever ultraviolet might be around.

I tend to find that I use both their common names. When I’m following one, hoping it will pose for photos, I tend to think of it as a Dusky Knight. Then when the blasted thing disappears without me being able to get any pictures the name Dingy Ring comes to mind!
